Why you need to plan for the worst in cybersecurity

CyberSkills.webp 2025-02-17 00:00:00 The Growing Threat of Phishing Attacks and How to Protect Yourself (lien direct) Phishing remains the most common type of cybercrime, evolving into a sophisticated threat that preys on human psychology and advanced technology. Traditional phishing involves attackers sending fake, malicious links disguised as legitimate messages to trick victims into revealing sensitive information or installing malware. However, phishing attacks have become increasingly advanced, introducing what experts call "phishing 2.0" and psychological phishing.  Phishing 2.0 leverages AI to analyse publicly available data, such as social media profiles and public records, to craft highly personalized and convincing messages. These tailored attacks significantly increase the likelihood of success. Psychological manipulation also plays a role in phishing schemes. Attackers exploit emotions like fear and trust, often creating a sense of urgency to pressure victims into acting impulsively. By impersonating trusted entities, such as banks or employers, they pressure victims into following instructions without hesitation.  AI has further amplified the efficiency and scale of phishing attacks. Cybercriminals use AI tools to generate convincing scam messages rapidly, launch automated campaigns and target thousands of individuals within minutes. Tools like ChatGPT, when misused in “DAN mode”, can bypass ethical restrictions to craft grammatically correct and compelling messages, aiding attackers who lack English fluency.  These cutting-edge threats combine the precision of AI-driven tools with the effectiveness of psychological manipulation, making phishing more dangerous than ever for individuals and organizations.  To combat these advanced threats, organizations must adopt a proactive defence strategy. They must begin by enhancing cybersecurity awareness through regular training sessions, equipping employees to recognize phishing attempts. They should implement advanced email filtering systems that use AI to detect even the most sophisticated phishing emails. They can strengthen security with multi-factor authentication (MFA), requiring multiple verification steps to protect sensitive accounts. By conducting regular security assessments, they can identify and mitigate vulnerabilities. Finally, by establishing a robust incident response plan to ensure swift and effective action when phishing incidents occur.  Cyber Skills can help you to upskill your team and prevent your organisation from falling victims to these advanced phishing attacks. With 80% government funding available for all Cyber Skills microcredentials, there is no better time to upskill. Apply today www.cyberskills.ie

While online dating can be a great way to meet new people, it is also important to be aware of the potential dangers. They often succeed by building trusting relationships over long periods of time.   Warning signs of Romance Scams Scammers typically gain trust by showering their target with attention and compliments before eventually asking them for money. They may claim it\'s for travel expenses, medical emergencies (typically of a child), or a business opportunity that would help to bring the relationship closer. Common red flags can include rushing the relationship, avoiding personal questions and refusing to meet in person. They may also try to move conversation off dating platforms to a less secure platform to avoid being detected as a scam. The once a week evening time courses, along with self paced learning offered allowed me to benefit from these online courses.   This course allowed me to visualize and verbalize the services i support from an infrastructure security standpoint rather than the usual service flow or operations support viewpoint.   Some key examples: Understanding why a certain cryptographic protocol is \'better\' than another in specific use cases and why protocols become obsolete. Choosing which security standards to follow and breadown of the sections to help focus on each area when needed. Designing and planning the security diagram and security strategy for a theoretical cloud based service.   When reviewing new services to be supported or developed, the knowledge gained will help me highlight gaps in the security design, along with the ability to explain why the gap exists   I would advise anyone looking to apply to a course, to check in on the timing and scheduling, it could surprise you with how accessible these courses can be, even to people with a loaded schedule."

This year, Cyber Skills honours four students who excelled in their chosen pathway. One of those four students is Garrett Downey who shares his experience of studying Secure Network Operations with Cyber Skills and the value of the pathway to him both personally and professionally.   "With a strong background in Technical Support, I decided to pivot into cybersecurity to help protect modern infrastructures from modern evolving threats. I discovered Cyber Skills through NewsTalk radio, and after exploring the course offerings, I found that the Secure Network Operations pathway perfectly aligned with my career goals and interests.    The course\'s modules - covering risk management, securing network services, implementing firewalls and IDS/IPS, and expert log analysis - offered exactly the knowledge and skills I needed to make this shift. The online distance learning format was ideal for balancing my studies with other commitments.    One of the standout features of the course was the access to the Cyber Range, where I could put theory into practice, honing my skills in a safe, simulated environment. This hands-on experience was invaluable in solidifying my understanding of the concepts taught, and building confidence in applying them to real-world scenarios.    Completing the Secure Network Operations course has already positively impacted my career. Motivated by this success, I have since started an MSc in Cybersecurity at MTU to deepen my expertise further and continue advancing in the information security field. This journey has been transformative, reinforcing my passion for cybersecurity and my commitment to safeguarding today\'s digital landscapes."

CyberSkills.webp 2024-12-02 00:00:00 GDPR and Elections: Are Politicians Crossing the Line? (lien direct) Lubna Luxmi Dhirani, an expert in regulation at the University of Limerick and a Cyber Skills team member, joined PJ Coogan on Cork's 96fm radio to discuss a pressing question: Are unsolicited campaign texts violating GDPR laws?  With the local elections just passed, Lubna's insights couldn't have been more relevant. Political campaigns often justify their outreach using GDPR's “legitimate interests” clause or public interest exemptions. But when voters receive  unexpected texts or calls, it raises concerns about how their data is being used-and whether their rights are being respected.    Know Your GDPR Rights  GDPR ensures your personal data is processed fairly, lawfully, and transparently. Key protections include:  Consent: Politicians must have explicit consent or a lawful basis to contact you. Access and Rectification: You have the right to see what data is held about you and correct inaccuracies. Fair Processing: Data use must align with legal grounds under GDPR Article 6.  If political campaigns can't clearly justify their use of your contact details, they could be breaching the law-a concern Lubna expertly addressed in her interview.    Why This Matters  As voters, understanding data protection is essential to ensuring a fair democratic process and protecting personal privacy. If you're unsure about your rights, visit the Data Protection Commission's website for guidance.    🎙️Listen to Lubna's full interview here: The Opinion Line with PJ Coogan   A huge congratulations to Lubna for her timely and impactful insights-helping us navigate the intersection of democracy, privacy, and data protection. ★★

Our own Jackie Kehoe features prominently in a recent article by Adrian Weckler in the Irish Independent, emphasising the gravity of the situation regarding the urgent need for Irish businesses to prepare for impending cybersecurity regulations. Key Takeaways: NIS2 Directive Awareness: Only 25% of executives are aware of the NIS2 directive, due to be transposed into Irish law by mid-October. Compliance Rates: Just 20% of Irish firms are currently compliant with NIS2. Potential Fines: NIS2 carries potential fines of up to €10 million or 2% of total worldwide annual turnover for non-compliance. Cyber Attack Statistics: 71% of Irish businesses suffered at least one cyber attack last year, with Ireland recording the highest median number of attacks among all countries studied. Operational Risks: The recent global IT outage caused by a faulty update from CrowdStrike highlights the potential operational disruption and financial losses from cyber attacks. As Jackie stresses, “The far-reaching consequences of a cyber attack could result in massive operational disruption and severe financial losses.” As the NIS2 compliance deadline approaches, it\'s crucial for businesses to take proactive steps to beef up their cybersecurity measures. At Cyber Skills, expert-led courses are offered to help organisations meet NIS2 requirements and strengthen their cybersecurity defences. Businesses should not wait until it\'s too late. Preparing now is essential to protect against cyber threats and avoid hefty fines. For more details, read the full article by Adrian Weckler here. CyberSkills.webp 2024-07-26 00:00:00 Facing Double Trouble: Rising Cyber Attacks and Imminent NIS2 Directive Fines (lien direct) In 2024, Ireland's businesses are facing a formidable challenge with the sharp increase in cyber attacks and the impending NIS2 Directive fines for non-compliance. Based at Munster Technological University (MTU), Cork, Project Manager of Cyber Skills, Jacqueline Kehoe sheds light on these critical issues and how organizations can prepare. Listen back to Jacqueline's full interview on 92.5 Phoenix FM here 🔍 Rising Cyber Threats: According to the latest Hiscox Cyber Readiness Report, 71% of Irish businesses experienced at least one cyber attack in the past year-a 22-point increase from the previous year. This positions Ireland as 'ground zero' for cyber attacks globally, with the highest median number of attacks among all countries studied. 💡 NIS2 Directive Fines: The EU Cyber Security directive, NIS2 (Network and Information Security), introduces severe financial penalties for non-compliance, effective from October 2024. Despite these threats, over 70% of Irish executives remain unaware or unprepared for NIS2 compliance, according to a recent Cybersecurity Trends Report from Microsoft Ireland. 📊 Critical Gaps in Cybersecurity Preparedness: 56% of businesses do not conduct regular risk assessments to identify vulnerabilities in systems and networks. 62% lack a multilayered IT strategy covering prevention, detection, response, and recovery. The global IT outage on July 19, caused by a faulty software update from CrowdStrike, serves as a stark reminder of our vulnerability to technological failures. Although not a malicious attack, it had a disastrous impact on airlines, media outlets, banks, and retailers worldwide. Imagine the devastation of a real cyber attack coupled with hefty NIS2 fines. At Cyber Skills, part of a broad initiative to enhance Ireland's cyber security and resilience, expert-led courses are designed to help organizations meet NIS2 requirements and strengthen their cybersecurity defences. Comprehensive training programs cover essential topics such as cybersecurity risk frameworks, incident response, and secure network services, ensuring participants are well-prepared to fend off attacks and comply with new regulations. Jacqueline Kehoe, Project Manager of Cyber Skills emphasises, "Cyberattacks are on the rise, and the introduction of the NIS2 Directive means that the cost of non-compliance is now higher than ever. By focusing on the directive's core principles-identify, protect, detect, respond, and recover-public bodies can be equipped to handle both current and future cybersecurity challenges." Unrivalled in cybersecurity education, Cyber Skills is a collaboration between Munster Technological University, University of Limerick, and Technological University Dublin. This unique partnership brings together top educators and researchers, offering unparalleled expertise and resources to enhance the cyber resilience of Irish businesses and public bodies. Tom is a Professor in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at University of Limerick, a project partner of Cyber Skills, sheds light on the pressing security challenges faced by legacy operational technology (OT) systems and the alarming rise in cyberattacks targeting industrial systems. In his article, Tom emphasizes the critical need for personnel skilled in OT security, highlighting the significant gap in experienced professionals in this rapidly growing area. As industries continue to integrate OT with IT networks-a process known as IT-OT convergence-the complexity of securing these environments increases, making specialized training and education programs more important than ever. Tom discusses how this paradigm is gradually shifting thanks to Irish Government initiatives like the Higher Education Authority Human Capital Initiative (HEA-HCI), which now provides 80% funding for cybersecurity courses at partner universities, MTU, UL and TUD. This funding empowers universities across Ireland to address industry skill gaps and develop comprehensive training programs. One such program is the Professional Diploma in OT Security, a collaboration between Graduate and Professional Studies at the University of Limerick and Cyber Skills. This course specifically targets the cybersecurity needs of integrated IT-OT systems. Participants have the opportunity to use advanced cyber range infrastructure, providing an on-site simulation solution to model both IT and OT environments. These simulations facilitate realistic scenario training, including genuine cyberattacks, helping participants develop practical skills t

Minister Simon Harris TD, has unveiled a HEA funding initiative of €9.7 million to support 13,879 learners across 654 micro-credential courses. This initiative, known as the Micro-Credential Course Learner Subsidy under the HCI Pillar 3, provides an 80% subsidy rate for courses targeting skills in critical areas such as cyber security, ICT, sustainability, construction, artificial intelligence, and electronic engineering.  Minister Harris highlighted the importance of adapting to the evolving workplace by acquiring new skills, emphasizing the role of micro-credentials in providing targeted and up-to-date expertise. He noted that while traditional degree programs are valuable, they may not always meet the specific needs of modern industries. Micro-credentials offer a flexible and accessible avenue for individuals to excel in their chosen fields. The subsidies provided present a valuable opportunity for learners and enterprises to access these courses at reduced rates, fostering both upskilling and flexible learning opportunities. Furthermore, some courses offer \'stackability,\' enabling learners to progressively build upon their skills for further qualifications. The Minister emphasized that these courses cover critical areas aligned with national priorities such as new technologies, cyber security, climate sustainability, and energy. Dr. Vivienne Patterson of the HEA emphasized the significance of micro-credential courses in providing incentivized lifelong learning opportunities for both learners and employers. These courses are designed to meet the evolving needs of learners, enterprises, and society, offering small, accredited programs ranging from 1 to 30 ECTS credits and awards at Levels 6-9 on the National Framework of Qualifications. The flexibility inherent in micro-credentials allows learners to pursue education in manageable units, accommodating their personal and professional commitments. Jacqueline Kehoe, Manager At Cyber Skills welcomed the new funding. "Micro-credentials provide a concise learning format that is both convenient for learners and beneficial for businesses. We understand that businesses and employees often encounter challenges in participating in and committing to upskilling initiatives. These obstacles can range from financial constraints and time limitations to concerns about relevance and uncertainty regarding available programs. We believe this funding will make our cyber security courses even more accessible. We will be reducing the price of our courses immediately to allow students to avail of this generous funding.” Approved courses will be available from March 2024 to October 2025. Detailed information on the approved micro-credential courses funded under the HCI Pillar 3, Micro-Credential Course Learner Subsidy, and application procedures can be found on the HEA website. www.hea.ie

It checks that the website you\'re about to buy from is genuine and free from malware. All you need to do is enter the website\'s address (URL) and CheckMyLink will quickly tell you if it\'s a safe place to shop. Donna O\' Shea, Chair of Cybersecurity, MTU alerts shoppers with a stark reminder: "While Christmas is a season of giving, for cyber criminals it\'s the season of stealing. CheckMyLink provides an essential check to ensure that online retailers are legitimate before any money changes hands." Seasonal Spending with a Side of Security In 2022 Ireland spent €3.5 billion online in December and €3.7 billion in November. [1] [2] This year it is expected these figures will increase as they have done every year. However, this heightened activity also brings with it an increased risk of online scams and fraudulent activities. As consumers search the internet for the best deals, they often encounter irresistible offers that may, in reality, be traps set by cybercriminals. These scams can range from phishing attempts to counterfeit websites designed to steal personal and financial information. Given this backdrop, it\'s crucial for consumers in Ireland to be particularly vigilant while shopping online during the Black Friday, Cyber Monday sales and for Christmas shopping. Detective Chief Superintendent Barry Walsh, Head of Garda National Cyber Crime Bureau, also highlighted: “There is an increased risk to consumers, particularly around this time of year, as hackers are using contaminated links hidden within emails, social media and other mainstream online platforms to gain access to passwords, credit card details or other sensitive information. An Garda Síochána are supporting the new initiative to enable users to verify the authenticity of web addresses and click-through domains prior to engaging with sites. It will also allow users to validate that they are legitimate entities.” Donna O\'Shea\'s Advice for Shoppers Donna O\'Shea advises a new shopping mantra for the digital age: "Click and collect should now be, \'Check, click and collect,\' we are urging the use of check.cyberskills.ie as an essential step before any online purchase." As Christmas gets closer, our friends and relatives will be trying to buy gifts that are hard to source and might be tempted to purchase them from a fake website. It is important that we are mindful of the websites we use."

Mr Simone Rodigari, whose supervisors included Dr Sean McSweeney, Dr Donna O\'Shea and Dr Pat McCarthy, graduated with a Master\'s of Science (by Research) at MTU annual conferring\'s. The title of his thesis was Performance Analysis of Zero Trust in Cloud Native Systems. As part of his work, Simone, assessed the performance overhead and possible mitigation in cloud native systems secured with a service mesh, which allows enabling security policies for the authentication, authorization and encryption of traffic within distributed systems. The side-car proxy is a core component of this architecture, acting as a policy enforcement point and intercepting networking communication from/to applications part of the mesh, consequently affecting the performance of applications hosted in the cloud. Physical resources are required to operate the control plane and data plane, while latency is affected by the enforcement of security policies and encryption. We configured a cloud environment consisting of a managed Kubernetes cluster, deployed a cloud native synthetic application, configured service mesh, tested the performance under load and analyzed results to establish the overhead in terms of latency, CPU and memory. The analysis is performed on both data and control plane. Additionally, a performance enhancement was explored with the use of extended Berkeley Packet Filter technology which operates at the Linux Kernel level. The Small Idea With a Big Impact on the Cybersecurity Talent Gap
(lien direct)
The cost of cybercrime is expected to reach $8 trillion globally this year, yet the scarcity of security talent is becoming more pronounced. With more than 750,000 cybersecurity positions unfilled in the U.S. and 3.5 million positions worldwide unfilled, the race is on to close the skills shortage that is estimated to contribute to 80% of all security breaches. In 2022, cyberattacks increased by 38%. The global average cost of a data breach reached $4.35 million, while the average cost of a data breach in the U.S. reached $9.44 million, according to a report by IBM and the U.S.-based Ponemon Institute. Bringing on more technical talent is central to companies in order to stop these threat actors. “Cybercrime can be very lucrative. And the reality is, talent is your best line of defense,” said Donna O\'Shea, chair of cybersecurity at Munster Technological University (MTU) in Cork, Ireland. Easing the Talent Crunch With Bite-Sized Learning As the digital economy evolves, more opportunities for malicious attacks are coming to the fore. Creative approaches aimed at increasing the pool of security professionals are emerging–and bringing down the barriers that once kept people from pursuing these lucrative roles. “There has been a lot of progress made in terms of the way that we deliver cybersecurity education,” O\'Shea said. Micro-credentials are small, accredited courses that allow candidates to pursue highly focused upskilling and reskilling that respond to niche labor market needs. Experts predict that lowering the time and costs involved in post-graduate studies will attract more learners and help address the cybersecurity talent scarcity. In 2020, the Irish Universities Association (IUA) was awarded €12.3 million through the country\'s Department of Further and Higher Education to become the first European country to establish a national framework for nationally accredited micro-credentials. “This is a real innovation in workforce development and lifelong learning,” says Aisling Soden, talent transformation & innovation manager for IDA Ireland. The cyberskills micro-credential programs are administered through academic institutes, co-designed by industry and, in time, will be transferrable across Europe. Because they are offered online, Soden also sees micro-credentials as a way to help companies upskill staff with specific cybersecurity skills to an international standard of education. These highly specific cybersecurity short courses will also benefit companies looking to upskill internal staff or access new talent in 25+ critical areas such as network systems, security standards & risk, security architecture, malware, reverse engineering and more. Soden envisions the micro-credential standards playing a bigger role on the global stage: “In the future, I can see these standards being recognized worldwide.” Underrepresented Communities: An Untapped Resource In 2022, Ireland was one of only a few countries to make headway in the quest to narrow cybersecurity talent shortages. Most regions around the world reported an increase in their cybersecurity workforce gap, according to a report by (ISC)², the world\'s leading cybersecurity professional organization. Last year, Ireland closed its cybersecurity skills gap by 19.5% while the global gap grew by 26.2%. O\'Shea stressed the need to do a “much better job globally of reaching underrepresented populations to fill these open positions.” Especially now, she says, as micro-credentials bring down the cost, time commitments and previously required masters-level studies for training for cybersecurity jobs, opportunities must increase for women, military veterans, minority groups and people from financially disadvantaged communities. There\'s also an untapped market of individuals displaced from hospitality and other service sectors during the pandemic. Society needs to do a better job of fostering cybersecurity talent across the entire hiring spectrum, said O\'Shea. Quick answers to Quick Questions: Ivan Houlihan, SVP & Head of West Coast U.S for IDA Ireland
(lien direct)
A slightly different conversation this week as we speak to Ivan Houlihan, Senior Vice President and Head of the West Coast of the United States for IDA Ireland–the Investment and Development Agency of the Irish Government, which promotes foreign direct investment into Ireland.  Based in California, Ivan leads the team that works closely with existing and potential clients in technology, financial services, life sciences and engineering throughout the Western US and Mexico.  We hope you enjoy this week\'s angle about on Cybersecurity, cyber skills and microcredentials. M.R. Rangaswami: How Do Microcredentials Address the Cybersecurity Talent Scarcity Problem? Ivan Houlihan: While nations pass resolutions and laws that try to prevent cybercrime, the most widespread answer is increasing the supply of expert security talent to stay ahead of the criminals.  Ivan Houlihan suggests an innovative approach, which involves the concept of microcredentials. These are small, accredited courses that allow candidates to pursue highly focused upskilling and reskilling that responds to specific market needs. Besides creating qualified new candidates to quickly come on board, this solution opens the door to workers that might otherwise not have pursued careers in cybersecurity. As the head of the West Coast U.S. for IDA Ireland, Houlihan has seen an increasing number of American technology firms with operations in Ireland employ this strategy to address their cybersecurity talent crunch.  When it comes to microcredentials in cybersecurity, Houlihan believes that Ireland\'s innovative training programs can become a model for other nations seeking to address the serious issue of cybercrime, which is predicted to cost the world $10.5 trillion by 2025. In this quick Q&A, he explains the basics of setting up a microcredentials program in the cybersecurity space – although microcredentials can be earned in other technical areas, too. M.R. Rangaswami: What are some of the current issues impacting cybersecurity staffing and why are microcredential programs a reasonable solution?  Ivan: Technology workers in general are often in short supply, but when it comes to qualified cybersecurity personnel, the problem is compounded by educational requirements along with needed specific skills that take time and money for those seeking to enter this field. Technical degrees, specialized training and often, often some graduate work, have discouraged many would-be candidates, particularly those put off by the prospect of student loans and related barriers. One of the biggest myths in the cybersecurity field is that it\'s just for people with high proficiency in math, men only or those with certain graduate degrees. People also assume they must go to renowned universities to study for the field in order to pursue such careers. All these factors have conspired to decrease the pool of qualified candidates. Microcredential programs short-circuit the time and cost of pursuing a lucrative cybersecurity career, although the field does require some technical training as a starting point. Fortunately, being male, having graduate degrees and other assumptions don\'t apply, however. Microcredentials bring down the cost and time commitments while increasing cybersecurity job opportunities for women, military veterans, minority groups, people from financially disadvantaged backgrounds, workers from other departments and others previously not often found in the profession. And since microcredential programs are typically online, they are of short duration and can be “stacked” or combined to form bigger accreditations – this makes it easier to get the right kind of training for a promising new career. The most successful microcredential programs demonstrate a collaborative effort between universities, governments, research institutions and industry, with the latter providing curriculum input based on what the candidates need to know to hit the ground running. Ensuring a fixed percentage of all national funding for digitalization be specifically ring fenced for cybersecurity. Establishing cybersecurity infrastructure to support collaborative R&D and skills and training. In her opening statement, Prof Donna O\'Shea stated that “Cyber capabilities within our own borders are important because even though talent can often be evenly distributed throughout the world, the opportunity for engaging that talent in the innovation economy is not equal. Innovation driven entrepreneurship clusters develop high concentration clusters around the world. In the cybersecurity sector, this clustering is particularly evident with cybersecurity innovation highly localized to specific regions supported by Government funded innovation ecosystems, Versova in Israel, Tallinn in Estonia, and Belfast in Northern Ireland are well known examples of established innovation ecosystems in cybersecurity.” Prof. O\'Shea emphasised the potential for a shared digital island which represents enormous opportunities for economic social advancement as physical political borders are becoming increasingly insignificant and the need for a common approach to protect the island of Ireland as a whole. Prof. O\'Shea also highlighted the need to establish a baseline standard of cybersecurity education with 50% of that education dedicated to practical activities. In closing, Prof. O\'Shea summarised the challenge and opportunity for the future is to ensure that Ireland has the capacity and capability to develop research development and innovation solutions to deal with the increasingly complex and expanding threat landscape that is a consequence of digitalization, and to realise this opportunity greater investment is required to ensure that we develop a more cohesive and responsive research development and innovation ecosystem supported by a highly skilled workforce of professionals.
