Traditional phishing involves attackers sending fake, malicious links disguised as legitimate messages to trick victims into revealing sensitive information or installing malware. However, phishing attacks have become increasingly advanced, introducing what experts call "phishing 2.0" and psychological phishing. Phishing 2.0 leverages AI to analyse publicly available data, such as social media profiles and public records, to craft highly personalized and convincing messages. These tailored attacks significantly increase the likelihood of success. Psychological manipulation also plays a role in phishing schemes. Attackers exploit emotions like fear and trust, often creating a sense of urgency to pressure victims into acting impulsively. By impersonating trusted entities, such as banks or employers, they pressure victims into following instructions without hesitation. AI has further amplified the efficiency and scale of phishing attacks. Cybercriminals use AI tools to generate convincing scam messages rapidly, launch automated campaigns and target thousands of individuals within minutes. Tools like ChatGPT, when misused in “DAN mode”, can bypass ethical restrictions to craft grammatically correct and compelling messages, aiding attackers who lack English fluency. 2025-02-17T00:00:00+00:00 https://www.cyberskills.ie/explore/news/the-growing-threat-of-phishing-attacks-and-how-to-protect-yourself--.html www.secnews.physaphae.fr/article.php?IdArticle=8648755 False Malware,Tool,Vulnerability,Threat ChatGPT 3.0000000000000000 Cyber Skills - Podcast Cyber Beware of Romance Scams this Valentine\\'s Day As Valentine\'s day approaches, many people are looking to connect with others online. While online dating can be a great way to meet new people, it is also important to be aware of the potential dangers. Romance scams, where fraudsters use fake profiles to financially and emotionally exploit victims are becoming more common. These scammers manipulate their victims into sending money under false pretenses. They often succeed by building trusting relationships over long periods of time. Warning signs of Romance Scams Scammers typically gain trust by showering their target with attention and compliments before eventually asking them for money. They may claim it\'s for travel expenses, medical emergencies (typically of a child), or a business opportunity that would help to bring the relationship closer. Common red flags can include rushing the relationship, avoiding personal questions and refusing to meet in person. They may also try to move conversation off dating platforms to a less secure platform to avoid being detected as a scam. If someone you have met online asks for financial help, it\'s a major warning sign. How to protect yourself Use trusted dating websites with strong security measures Keep personal details private and be cautious when sharing information Never send money or provide financial assistance to someone that you haven\'t met in person. Be careful with your webcams, as scammers often try to exploit video recordings as ransom. Key Takeaways: NIS2 Directive Awareness: Only 25% of executives are aware of the NIS2 directive, due to be transposed into Irish law by mid-October. Compliance Rates: Just 20% of Irish firms are currently compliant with NIS2. Potential Fines: NIS2 carries potential fines of up to €10 million or 2% of total worldwide annual turnover for non-compliance. Cyber Attack Statistics: 71% of Irish businesses suffered at least one cyber attack last year, with Ireland recording the highest median number of attacks among all countries studied. Operational Risks: The recent global IT outage caused by a faulty update from CrowdStrike highlights the potential operational disruption and financial losses from cyber attacks. As Jackie stresses, “The far-reaching consequences of a cyber attack could result in massive operational disruption and severe financial losses.” As the NIS2 compliance deadline approaches, it\'s crucial for businesses to take proactive steps to beef up their cybersecurity measures. At Cyber Skills, expert-led courses are offered to help organisations meet NIS2 requirements and strengthen their cybersecurity defences. Businesses should not wait until it\'s too late. Preparing now is essential to protect against cyber threats and avoid hefty fines. For more details, read the full article by Adrian Weckler here. The title of his thesis was Performance Analysis of Zero Trust in Cloud Native Systems. As part of his work, Simone, assessed the performance overhead and possible mitigation in cloud native systems secured with a service mesh, which allows enabling security policies for the authentication, authorization and encryption of traffic within distributed systems. The side-car proxy is a core component of this architecture, acting as a policy enforcement point and intercepting networking communication from/to applications part of the mesh, consequently affecting the performance of applications hosted in the cloud. Physical resources are required to operate the control plane and data plane, while latency is affected by the enforcement of security policies and encryption. We configured a cloud environment consisting of a managed Kubernetes cluster, deployed a cloud native synthetic application, configured service mesh, tested the performance under load and analyzed results to establish the overhead in terms of latency, CPU and memory. This hard but important conversation discussed the negative impact technology can have in relation to coercive control. Fast forward to September and a collaboration between Cyber Skills, Safe Ireland and Cyber Awareness Ireland (CAI) - National Cyber Security Awareness Task Force, led to the launch of the #RedFlagsAreAbuse campaign, which highlights even further how digital technology facilitates coercive control. Through a series of billboards across Cork city and an online conversation, we are exposing three different scenarios that people may think are “normal”: Incessant contact - when the perpetrator constantly contacts and keeps tabs on the victim across multiple platforms. This creates a feeling there is no escape from the individual even when physically apart from one another. Location-sharing - demanding that the victim always has location sharing turned on serves as a means of keeping tabs on the victim. Restricting access to finances - with digital banking, the person can not only control access to money but can also monitor spending activity in real-time. Following the two-week billboard campaign, CAI will launch a booklet for frontline responders and specialist domestic violence professionals outlining the nature of technology use in abuse. Professor Donna O\'Shea, Chair of Cyber Security at MTU and Project Lead at Cyber Skills, said: “The #RedFlagsAreAbuse billboard campaign is something that the Cyber Skills team and I are extremely proud of, and we will continue in our remit to improve the cyber resilience of our citizens through our funded EPE programme and initiatives.” If you have been affected by abuse, please visit: safeireland.ie 2022-09-20T00:00:00+00:00 https://www.cyberskills.ie/explore/news/redflagsareabuse-campaign---how-digital-technology-facilitates-coercive-control-.html www.secnews.physaphae.fr/article.php?IdArticle=8517429 False None None 2.0000000000000000 Cyber Skills - Podcast Cyber Janssen Sciences parraine le concours de cybersécurité de WorldSkills Ireland
Janssen Sciences sponsors Worldskills Ireland cybersecurity competition 2022-09-14T00:00:00+00:00 https://www.cyberskills.ie/explore/news/janssen-sciences-sponsors-worldskills-ireland-cybersecurity-competition.html www.secnews.physaphae.fr/article.php?IdArticle=8517430 False None None 2.0000000000000000 Cyber Skills - Podcast Cyber Upskilling en cybersécurité - Dr George O \\\ 'Mahony & Hazel Murray
Upskilling in cybersecurity - Dr. George O\\\'Mahony & Hazel Murray Lecturers and Researchers at MTU, Dr. George O\'Mahony and Hazel Murray contributed to this article in the Independent, Upskilling in cybersecurity.
