DeepSeek R1, the AI model making all the buzz right now, has been found to have several vulnerabilities that allowed security researchers at the Cyber Threat Intelligence firm Kela to jailbreak it.
Kela tested these jailbreaks around known vulnerabilities and bypassed the restriction mechanism on the chatbot.
This allowed them to jailbreak it across a wide range of scenarios, enabling it to generate malicious outputs, such as ransomware development, fabrication of sensitive content, and detailed instructions for creating toxins and explosive devices.
For instance, the “Evil Jailbreak” method (Prompts the AI model to adopt an “evil” persona), which was able to trick the earlier models of ChatGPT and fixed long back, still works on DeepSeek.
The news comes in while DeepSeek investigates a cyberattack, not allowing new registrations.
“Due to large-scale malicious attacks on DeepSeek’s services, we are temporarily limiting registrations to ensure continued service. Existing users can log in as usual.” DeepSeek’s status page reads.
While it does not confirm what kind of cyberattack disrupts its service, it seems to be a DDoS attack.
DeepSeek is yet to comment on these vulnerabilities.

Create clear policies for complex techniques like data anonymization to prevent inadvertent exposure of sensitive data
Appreciate why it\'s important to follow organizational policies

AI introduces unique risks, such as accidental data leakage. Another risk is “confused pilot” attacks where AI systems inadvertently expose sensitive data. Conduct thorough threat modeling for each AI use case:

Identify potential vulnerabilities in training data, prompts and responses
Implement scanning and monitoring tools to observe interactions with AI systems

Data Security Posture Management (DSPM) is an invaluable framework for securing AI. By providing visibility into data types, access patterns and risk exposure, DSPM enables organizations to:
Identify sensitive data being used for AI training or inference
Monitor and control who has access to critical data
Ensure compliance with data governance policies
Test before you deploy
AI is nondeterministic by nature. This means that its behavior can vary unpredictably. Before deploying AI tools, conduct rigorous testing:
Red team your AI systems to uncover potential vulnerabilities
Use AI-specific testing tools to simulate real-world scenarios
Establish observability layers to monitor AI interactions post-deployment
Collaborate across departments
Effective AI security requires cross-departmental collaboration. Engage teams from marketing, finance, compliance and beyond to:

What\'s more, Amazon and Samsung were reported to have found employees sharing code and other confidential data with OpenAI\'s chatbot.
Compare that to headlines in 2024. Now, the focus is on how AI assistants are being adopted by corporations everywhere. J.P. Morgan is rolling out ChatGPT to 60,000 employees to help them work more efficiently. And Amazon recently announced that by using GenAI to migrate 30,000 applications onto a new platform it had saved the equivalent of 4,500 developer years as well as $260 million.
The 2024 McKinsey Global Survey on AI also shows how much things have changed. It found that 65% of respondents say that their organizations are now using GenAI regularly. That\'s nearly double the number from 10 months ago.
What this trend indicates most is that organizations feel the competitive pressure to either embrace GenAI or risk falling behind. So, how can they mitigate their risks? That\'s what we\'re here to discuss.
Generative AI: A new insider risk
Given its nature as a productivity tool, GenAI opens the door to insider risks by careless, compromised or malicious users.
Careless insiders. These users may input sensitive data-like customer information, proprietary algorithms or internal strategies-into GenAI tools. Or they may use them to create content that does not align with a company\'s legal or regulatory standards, like documents with discriminatory language or images with inappropriate visuals. This, in turn, creates legal risks. Additionally, some users may use GenAI tools that are not authorized, which leads to security vulnerabilities and compliance issues.
Compromised insiders. Access to GenAI tools can be compromised by threat actors. Attackers use this access to extract, generate or share sensitive data with external parties.
Malicious insiders. Some insiders actively want to cause harm. So, they might intentionally leak sensitive information into public GenAI tools. Or, if they have access to proprietary models or datasets, they might use these tools to create competing products. They could also use GenAI to create or alter records to make it difficult for auditors to identify discrepancies or non-compliance.
To mitigate these risks, organizations need a mix of human-centric technical controls, internal policies and strategies. Not only do they need to be able to monitor AI usage and data access, but they also need to have measures in place-like employee training-as well as a solid ethical framework.

The cost of these breaches also soared to $10.93 million last year, an increase of over 53% over the past three years, IBM’s 2023 Cost of a Data Breach report reveals. But data breaches aren’t just expensive, they also harm patient privacy, damage organizational reputation, and erode patient trust in healthcare providers. As data breaches are now largely a matter of “when” not “if”, it’s important to devise a solid data breach response plan. By acting fast to prevent further damage and data loss, you can restore operations as quickly as possible with minimal harm done.
Contain the Breach
Once a breach has been detected, you need to act fast to contain it, so it doesn’t spread. That means disconnecting the affected system from the network, but not turning it off altogether as your forensic team still needs to investigate the situation. Simply unplug the network cable from the router to disconnect it from the internet. If your antivirus scanner has found malware or a virus on the system, quarantine it, so it can be analyzed later. Keep the firewall settings as they are and save all firewall and security logs. You can also take screenshots if needed. It’s also smart to change all access control login details. Strong complex passwords are a basic cybersecurity feature difficult for hackers and software to crack. It’s still important to record old passwords for future investigation. Also, remember to deactivate less-important accounts.
Document the Breach
You then need to document the breach, so forensic investigators can find out what caused it, as well as recommend accurate next steps to secure the network now and prevent future breaches. So, in your report, explain how you came to hear of the breach and relay exactly what was stated in the notification (including the date and time you were notified). Also, document every step you took in response to the breach. This includes the date and time you disconnected systems from the network and changed account credentials and passwords.
If you use artificial intelligence (AI) tools, you’ll also need to consider whether they played a role in the breach, and document this if so. For example, ChatGPT, a popular chatbot and virtual assistant, can successfully exploit zero-day security vulnerabilities 87% of the time, a recent study by researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign found. Although AI is increasingly used in healthcare to automate tasks, manage patient data, and even make tailored care recommendations, it does pose a serious risk to patient data integrity despite the other benefits it provides. So, assess whether AI influenced your breach at all, so your organization can make changes as needed to better prevent data breaches in the future.

In this post, we will look at how adversaries use impersonation via BEC to target the manufacturing supply chain.
Background
BEC attacks are sophisticated schemes that exploit human vulnerabilities and technological weaknesses. A bad actor will take the time to meticulously craft an email that appears to come from a trusted source, like a supervisor or a supplier. They aim to manipulate the email recipient into doing something that serves the attacker\'s interests. It\'s an effective tactic, too. The latest FBI Internet Crime Report notes that losses from BEC attacks exceeded $2.9 billion in 2023.
Manufacturers are prime targets for cybercriminals for these reasons:
Valuable intellectual property. The theft of patents, trade secrets and proprietary processes can be lucrative.
Complex supply chains. Attackers who impersonate suppliers can easily exploit the interconnected nature of supply chains.
Operational disruption. Disruption can cause a lot of damage. Attackers can use it for ransom demands, too.
Financial fraud. Threat actors will try to manipulate these transactions so that they can commit financial fraud. They may attempt to alter bank routing information as part of their scheme, for example.
The scenario
Proofpoint recently caught a threat actor impersonating a legitimate supplier of a leading manufacturer of sustainable fiber-based packaging products. Having compromised the supplier\'s account, the imposter sent an email providing the manufacturer with new banking details, asking that payment for an invoice be sent to a different bank account. If the manufacturer had complied with the request, the funds would have been stolen.
The threat: How did the attack happen?
Here is a closer look at how the attack unfolded:
1. The initial message. A legitimate supplier sent an initial outreach email from their account to the manufacturing company using an email address from their official account. The message included details about a real invoice that was pending payment.

2. The deceptive message. Unfortunately, subsequent messages were not sent from the supplier, but from a threat actor who was pretending to work there. While this next message also came from the supplier\'s account, the account had been compromised by an attacker. This deceptive email included an attachment that included new bank payment routing information. Proofpoint detected and blocked this impersonation email.
In an attempt to get a response, the threat actor sent a follow-up email using a lookalike domain that ended in “.cam” instead of “.com.” Proofpoint also condemned this message.

In Japan, there was a 35% increase year-over-year for BEC attacks. Meanwhile, in Korea they jumped 31% and in the UAE 29%. It turns out that GenAI boosts productivity for cybercriminals, too. Bad actors are always on the lookout for low-effort, high-return modes of attack. And GenAI checks those boxes. Its speed and scalability enhance social engineering, making it faster and easier for attackers to mine large datasets of actionable data.
As malicious email threats increase in sophistication and frequency, Proofpoint is innovating to stop these attacks before they reach users\' inboxes. In this blog, we\'ll take a closer look at GenAI email threats and how Proofpoint semantic analysis can help you stop them.
Why GenAI email threats are so dangerous
Verizon\'s 2023 Data Breach Investigations Report notes that three-quarters of data breaches (74%) involve the human element. If you were to analyze the root causes behind online scams, ransomware attacks, credential theft, MFA bypass, and other malicious activities, that number would probably be a lot higher. Cybercriminals also cost organizations over $50 billion in total losses between October 2013 and December 2022 using BEC scams. That represents only a tiny fraction of the social engineering fraud that\'s happening.
Email is the number one threat vector, and these findings underscore why. Attackers find great success in using email to target people. As they expand their use of GenAI to power the next generation of email threats, they will no doubt become even better at it.

Bad actors can ask GenAI to write grammatically perfect messages that mimic someone\'s writing style-and do it in multiple languages. That\'s why businesses around the globe now see credible malicious email threats coming at their users on a massive scale.
How can these threats be stopped? It all comes down to understanding a message\'s intent.
Stop threats before they\'re delivered with semantic analysis

What is Microsoft Bing AI Chat Used for?
Microsoft has released the Bing AI chat in collaboration with OpenAI after the release of ChatGPT. This AI chatbot is a relatively advanced version of ChatGPT 3, known as ChatGPT 4, promising more creativity and accuracy. Therefore, unlike ChatGPT 3, the Bing AI chatbot has several uses, including the ability to generate new content such as images, code, and texts. Apart from that, the chatbot also serves as a conversational web search engine and answers questions about current events, history, random facts, and almost every other topic in a concise and conversational manner. Moreover, it also allows image inputs, such that users can upload images in the chatbot and ask questions related to them.
Since the chatbot has several impressive features, its use quickly spread in various industries, specifically within the creative industry. It is a handy tool for generating ideas, research, content, and graphics. However, one major problem with its adoption is the various cybersecurity issues and risks that the chatbot poses. The problem with these cybersecurity issues is that it is not possible to mitigate them through traditional security tools like VPN, antivirus, etc., which is a significant reason why chatbots are still not as popular as they should be.
Is Microsoft Bing AI Chat Safe?
Like ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing Chat is fairly new, and although many users claim that it is far better in terms of responses and research, its security is something to remain skeptical over. Vulnerabilities in ChatGPT
A recent discovered vulnerability found in version gpt-3.5-turbo exposed identifiable information. The vulnerability was reported in the news late November 2023. By repeating a particular word continuously to the chatbot it triggered the vulnerability. A group of security researchers with Google DeepMind, Cornell University, CMU, UC Berkeley, ETH Zurich, and the University of Washington studied the “extractable memorization” of training data that an adversary can extract by querying a ML model without prior knowledge of the training dataset.
The researchers’ report show an adversary can extract gigabytes of training data from open-source language models. In the vulnerability testing, a new developed divergence attack on the aligned ChatGPT caused the model to emit training data 150 times higher. Findings show larger and more capable LLMs are more vulnerable to data extraction attacks, emitting more memorized training data as the volume gets larger. While similar attacks have been documented with unaligned models, the new ChatGPT vulnerability exposed a successful attack on LLM models typically built with strict guardrails found in aligned models.
This raises questions about best practices and methods in how AI systems could better secure LLM models, build training data that is reliable and trustworthy, and protect privacy.
U.S. and UK’s Bilateral cybersecurity effort on securing AI
The US Cybersecurity Infrastructure and Security Agency (CISA) and UK’s National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) in cooperation with 21 agencies and ministries from 18 other countries are supporting the first global guidelines for AI security. The new UK-led guidelines for securing AI as part of the U.S. and UK’s bilateral cybersecurity effort was announced at the end of November 2023.
The pledge is an acknowledgement of AI risk by nation leaders and government agencies worldwide and is the beginning of international collaboration to ensure the safety and security of AI by design. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) CISA and UK NCSC joint guidelines for Secure AI system Development aims to ensure cybersecurity decisions are embedded at every stage of the AI development lifecycle from the start and throughout, and not as an afterthought.

Securing AI by design is a key approach to mitigate cybersecurity risks and other vulnerabilities in AI systems. Ensuring the entire AI system development lifecycle process is secure from design to development, deployment, and operations and maintenance is critical to an organization realizing its full benefits. At the same time, it is also important for us to understand how AI can be potentially misused in the hands of threat actors. In collaboration with OpenAI, today we are publishing research on emerging threats in the age of AI, focusing on identified activity associated with known threat actors, including prompt-injections, attempted misuse of large language models (LLM), and fraud. Our analysis of the current use of LLM technology by threat actors revealed behaviors consistent with attackers using AI as another productivity tool on the offensive landscape. The objective of Microsoft\'s partnership with OpenAI, including the release of this research, is to ensure the safe and responsible use of AI technologies like ChatGPT, upholding the highest standards of ethical application to protect the community from potential misuse. As part of this commitment, we have taken measures to disrupt assets and accounts associated with threat actors, improve the protection of OpenAI LLM technology and users from attack or abuse, and shape the guardrails and safety mechanisms around our models. ### **A principled approach to detecting and blocking threat actors**

Our actions enhancing the safeguards of our AI models and partnering with our ecosystem on the safe creation, implementation, and use of these models align with the Executive Order\'s request for comprehensive AI safety and security standards.
In line with Microsoft\'s leadership across AI and cybersecurity, today we are announcing principles shaping Microsoft\'s policy and actions mitigating the risks associated with the use of our AI tools and APIs by nation-state advanced persistent threats (APTs), advanced persistent manipulators (APMs), and cybercriminal syndicates we track.

New world, new vulnerabilities

While large language models took the stage, the fear of misuse prompted the U.S. president to issue an executive order in October 2023. At the moment, threat actors are making bank doing other things. Why bother reinventing the model when it\'s working just fine? But they\'ll morph their TTPs when detection starts to improve in those areas.

It is common knowledge that when it comes to cybersecurity, there is no one-size-fits all definition of risk, nor is there a place for static plans. New technologies are created, new vulnerabilities discovered, and more attackers appear on the horizon. Most recently the appearance of advanced language models such as ChatGPT have taken this concept and turned the dial up to eleven. These AI tools are capable of creating targeted malware with no technical training required and can even walk you through how to use them.
While official tools have safeguards in place (with more being added as users find new ways to circumvent them) that reduce or prevent them being abused, there are several dark web offerings that are happy to fill the void. Enterprising individuals have created tools that are specifically trained on malware data and are capable of supporting other attacks such as phishing or email-compromises.
Re-evaluating risk
While risk should always be regularly evaluated it is important to identify when significant technological shifts materially impact the risk landscape. Whether it is the proliferation of mobile devices in the workplace or easy access to internet-connected devices with minimal security (to name a few of the more recent developments) there are times when organizations need to completely reassess their risk profile. Vulnerabilities unlikely to be exploited yesterday may suddenly be the new best-in-breed attack vector today.
There are numerous ways to evaluate, prioritize, and address risks as they are discovered which vary between organizations, industries, and personal preferences. At the most basic level, risks are evaluated by multiplying the likelihood and impact of any given event. These factors may be determined through numerous methods, and may be affected by countless elements including:
Geography
Industry
Motivation of attackers
Skill of attackers
Cost of equipment
Maturity of the target’s security program
In this case, the advent of tools like ChatGPT greatly reduce the barrier to entry or the “skill” needed for a malicious actor to execute an attack. Sophisticated, targeted, attacks can be created in minutes with minimal effort from the attacker. Organizations that were previously safe due to their size, profile, or industry, now may be targeted simply because it is easy to do so. This means all previously established risk profiles are now out of date and do not accurately reflect the new environment businesses find themselves operating in. Even businesses that have a robust risk management process and mature program may find themselves struggling to adapt to this new reality.
Recommendations
While there is no one-size-fits-all solution, there are some actions businesses can take that will likely be effective. First, the business should conduct an immediate assessment and analysis of their currently identified risks. Next, the business should assess whether any of these risks could be reasonably combined (also known as aggregated) in a way that materially changes their likelihood or impact. Finally, the business must ensure their executive teams are aware of the changes to the businesses risk profile and consider amending the organization’s existing risk appetite and tolerances.
Risk assessment & analysis
It is important to begin by reassessing the current state of risk within the organization. As noted earlier, risks or attacks that were previously considered unlikely may now be only a few clicks from being deployed in mass. The organization should walk through their risk register, if one exists, and evaluate all identified risks. This may be time consuming, and the organization should of course prioritize critical and high risks first, but it is important to ensure the business has the information they need to effectively address risks.

Verizon\'s DBIR always has a lot of information to unpack, so I\'ll continue my review by covering how stolen credentials play a role in attacks.
This year\'s Data Breach Investigations Report has nearly 1 million incidents in their data set, making it the most statistically relevant set of report data anywhere.
So, what does the report say about the most common threat actions that are involved in data breaches? Overall, the use of stolen credentials is the overwhelming leader in data breaches, being involved in nearly 45% of breaches – this is more than double the second-place spot of "Other" (which includes a number of types of threat actions) and ransomware, which sits at around 20% of data breaches.
According to Verizon, stolen credentials were the "most popular entry point for breaches." As an example, in Basic Web Application Attacks, the use of stolen credentials was involved in 86% of attacks. The prevalence of credential use should come as no surprise, given the number of attacks that have focused on harvesting online credentials to provide access to both cloud platforms and on-premises networks alike.
And it\'s the social engineering attacks (whether via phish, vish, SMiSh, or web) where these credentials are compromised - something that can be significantly diminished by engaging users in security awareness training to familiarize them with common techniques and examples of attacks, so when they come across an attack set on stealing credentials, the user avoids becoming a victim.

The New Verizon DBIR is a treasure trove of data. As we will cover a bit below, Verizon reported that 74% of data breaches Involve the "Human Element," so people are one of the most common factors contributing to successful data breaches. Let\'s drill down a bit more in the social engineering section.
They explained: "Now, who has received an email or a direct message on social media from a friend or family member who desperately needs money? Probably fewer of you. This is social engineering (pretexting specifically) and it takes more skill.
"The most convincing social engineers can get into your head and convince you that someone you love is in danger. They use information they have learned about you and your loved ones to trick you into believing the message is truly from someone you know, and they use this invented scenario to play on your emotions and create a sense of urgency. The DBIR Figure 35 shows that Pretexting is now more prevalent than Phishing in Social Engineering incidents. However, when we look at confirmed breaches, Phishing is still on top."
A social attack known as BEC, or business email compromise, can be quite intricate. In this type of attack, the perpetrator uses existing email communications and information to deceive the recipient into carrying out a seemingly ordinary task, like changing a vendor\'s bank account details. But what makes this attack dangerous is that the new bank account provided belongs to the attacker. As a result, any payments the recipient makes to that account will simply disappear.
BEC Attacks Have Nearly Doubled
It can be difficult to spot these attacks as the attackers do a lot of preparation beforehand. They may create a domain doppelganger that looks almost identical to the real one and modify the signature block to show their own number instead of the legitimate vendor.
Attackers can make many subtle changes to trick their targets, especially if they are receiving many similar legitimate requests. This could be one reason why BEC attacks have nearly doubled across the DBIR entire incident dataset, as shown in Figure 36, and now make up over 50% of incidents in this category.
Financially Motivated External Attackers Double Down on Social Engineering
Timely detection and response is crucial when dealing with social engineering attacks, as well as most other attacks. Figure 38 shows a steady increase in the median cost of BECs since 2018, now averaging around $50,000, emphasizing the significance of quick detection.

gpt_academic provides a graphical interface for ChatGPT/GLM. A vulnerability was found in gpt_academic 3.37 and prior. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Configuration File Handler. The manipulation of the argument file leads to information disclosure. Since no sensitive files are configured to be off-limits, sensitive information files in some working directories can be read through the `/file` route, leading to sensitive information leakage. This affects users that uses file configurations via `config.py`, `config_private.py`, `Dockerfile`. A patch is available at commit 1dcc2873d2168ad2d3d70afcb453ac1695fbdf02. As a workaround, one may use environment variables instead of `config*.py` files to configure this project, or use docker-compose installation to configure this project. |

[Double Trouble] 78% of Ransomware Victims Face Multiple Extortions in Scary Trend
New data sheds light on how likely your organization will succumb to a ransomware attack, whether you can recover your data, and what\'s inhibiting a proper security posture.
You have a solid grasp on what your organization\'s cybersecurity stance does and does not include. But is it enough to stop today\'s ransomware attacks? CyberEdge\'s 2023 Cyberthreat Defense Report provides some insight into just how prominent ransomware attacks are and what\'s keeping orgs from stopping them.
According to the report, in 2023:
7% of organizations were victims of a ransomware attack
7% of those paid a ransom
73% were able to recover data
Only 21.6% experienced solely the encryption of data and no other form of extortion
It\'s this last data point that interests me. Nearly 78% of victim organizations experienced one or more additional forms of extortion. CyberEdge mentions threatening to publicly release data, notifying customers or media, and committing a DDoS attack as examples of additional threats mentioned by respondents.
IT decision makers were asked to rate on a scale of 1-5 (5 being the highest) what were the top inhibitors of establishing and maintaining an adequate defense. The top inhibitor (with an average rank of 3.66) was a lack of skilled personnel – we\'ve long known the cybersecurity industry is lacking a proper pool of qualified talent.
In second place, with an average ranking of 3.63, is low security awareness among employees – something only addressed by creating a strong security culture with new-school security awareness training at the center of it all.
